2. Functions and Applications (MCF3M): Units of Study

This course is broken down into 2 basic components:

  • 7 Units of Study (70% of Final Grade)

  • Final Exam (30% of Final Grade)

Let’s look in more detail at the 2 basic components of Grade 11 Math Online: FUNCTIONS AND APPLICATIONS.

a) 7 Units of Study

The following is a list of the 7 units of study and the essential questions that WISS has created to help students begin thinking about each unit of study. For more detailed information about the units, please visit https://www.waterlooindependentschool.ca/grade11courses.

  • UNIT ONE - Introduction to Functions: How can observed patterns be used to make predictions about unknown quantities?

  • UNIT TWO - Quadratic Relations: How can models be used to make predictions in real-world scenarios?

  • UNIT THREE - Solving Quadratic Equations: How can we decide when certain problem-solving strategies should be used over others?

  • UNIT FOUR - Trigonometry: How do effective problem-solvers approach problems that involve multiple steps?

  • UNIT FIVE - Trigonometric Functions: What are the implications of using models to make predictions? Is it possible to have a model that is entirely accurate?

  • UNIT SIX - Exponential Functions: What are the implications of using models to make predictions? Is it possible to have a model that is entirely accurate?

  • UNIT SEVEN - Financial Applications: Can and should mathematical problem-solving strategies be used to make real-world decisions?

Students will represent functions numerically, graphically, and algebraically. They will simplify expressions, solve equations, and solve problems relating to applications. They’ll ask meaningful questions to apply their learning and, overall, students will develop experience with quadratic relations.

b) Final Exam

The final exam is the student’s final evaluation. It is a proctored exam that takes about 2 hours to complete and is worth 30% of the final grade. Students are expected to complete and submit all coursework before writing their final exam and will need to make advanced arrangements to write their exam.

As with other courses at WISS, Grade 11 Math Online: FUNCTIONS AND APPLICATIONS MCF3M is a well-organized class that is taught by knowledgeable and caring teachers. WISS boasts small class sizes, flexible schedules, and frequent student support to encourage student success.

This course teaches concepts that directly correlate to real-world applications like calculating interest or population growth.

3. Benefits of Taking Functions and Applications (MCF3M)

Taking the Functions and Applications (MCF3M) course provides several benefits for students, particularly in developing their mathematical understanding and preparing them for future studies or practical real-world applications. Some of the key benefits include:

Balanced Focus on Theory and Application

  • The course combines algebraic concepts with real-world applications, helping students see the relevance of mathematics in everyday life, business, and science. This makes math more approachable and engaging for students who may not plan to pursue highly theoretical courses.

Foundation for Future Studies

  • MCF3M provides a solid foundation for students who are considering future courses in business, technology or applied mathematics. It prepares students for courses like Grade 12 Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U) or College Mathematics.

  • Students can also transition to more advanced academic math courses if they demonstrate proficiency in this course.

Improved Problem-Solving Skills

  • Students are exposed to various types of problems, particularly through mathematical modelling and systems of equations, helping them build logical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • The course encourages critical thinking by challenging students to apply their knowledge in new and complex situations.

Preparation for Real-Life Scenarios

  • The focus on quadratic, exponential, and trigonometric functions directly correlates to real-world applications like calculating interest, population growth, and angles in construction.

  • Exponential functions, for instance, are fundamental in fields such as finance (e.g., compound interest) and biology (e.g., population growth).

Develops Graphical Understanding

  • The emphasis on graphing functions helps students better understand the relationships between variables and how to visualize data, which is useful in many professional fields like engineering, economics, and computer science.

  • Understanding how to interpret graphs, especially of quadratic and exponential functions, is valuable in making data-driven decisions in various careers.

Trigonometry for Technical Fields

  • Learning trigonometric ratios and laws is crucial for students interested in careers in engineering, architecture, aviation, and construction, where calculating angles and dimensions is essential.

Enhanced Algebraic Skills

  • The course sharpens students’ abilities to manipulate and work with algebraic expressions and equations, particularly in solving quadratic and linear systems, which is essential for higher-level math and technical fields.

Preparation for College or University Programs

  • MCF3M is especially useful for students planning to enter college programs that require a strong foundation in math but may not be as heavily theoretical as pure mathematics. Fields like business administration, information technology, and health sciences often rely on the mathematical skills developed in this course.

Flexible Pathways

  • The course is structured to accommodate students who may not be pursuing math-intensive careers, offering them a more accessible yet robust understanding of essential mathematical concepts.

  • It offers a pathway to either university or college-level courses, providing flexibility for students based on their evolving academic or career goals.

On top of all the practical skills students gain and the future opportunities that arise from it, students also gain confidence in handling math-related tasks. This can reduce anxiety and enhance performance not just in math, but in other subjects that involve analytical thinking and numerical data (like sciences and economics).

In summary, MCF3M builds mathematical literacy in a way that balances theory and practical application, offering value whether students intend to pursue further studies in math or apply it in their everyday and professional lives.
