Description: The activities have two intentions: to teach concepts that relate to the local community and to help students make connections with their own experiences and the community they live in. This resource provides a snapshot for the teacher to expose their students to the many aspects of the local community. Below is a brief summary of the lessons included with this resource.
Lesson 1: What is a Community? This lesson is designed to get the students thinking about their surroundings and the people they interact with on a daily basis.
Lesson 2: The Community and How We Use It allows the students to view their community and the special things they do within its boundaries.
Lesson 3: Occupations in the Community introduces some popular occupations that are prominent in the community.
Lesson 4: Recycling and Caring for the Community introduces the students to the needs of the community and why it should be cared for. Students will learn about the process of recycling.
Lesson 5: Mapping Our Community Services students will have a chance to map out their community through their own created maps.
Lesson 6: Services in the Community wraps up the unit and allows the students to learn about the variety of services that they or their parents may interact with on a weekly basis.
The Extras provide extra assignments that do not have a specific lesson that they are attached to but help to reinforce the content that the students have been learning in the unit. The unit test is also found in this section.
